About Book Pets
Book Pets® make reading fun, safe, and engaging - helping children feel calm, curious, and confident. By engaging multiple senses - sight, touch, and emotion - children focus better, remember more, and develop a lifelong love of reading.
Our Brand Story
Positive Learning, Powered by Pets.
Our mission is to spread the joy of reading through the love of animals — because when learning is fun, it lasts a lifetime.
Our Philosophy: Enjoy • Connect • Learn
Enjoy — Reading should feel good. Book Pets® turn books into a joyful, hands-on experience that children look forward to every day.
Connect — Inspired by real animals, each Book Pet® helps children feel emotionally safe, calm, and understood — just like a trusted animal companion.
Learn — When children feel relaxed and engaged, their minds open to curiosity and deeper learning. Book Pets® nurture confidence and concentration, helping children develop a lifelong love of reading.
Our Why
As a mum and vet nurse, I’ve seen how positive reinforcement builds trust, confidence, and a desire to want to learn — in both animals and children. That’s why I created Book Pets®.
I believe that when a child (and an animal) feels safe, understood, and engaged, their subconscious shifts from 'I'm trying not to fail' to 'I'm curious - I'm exploring because I feel good.' That's when real learning happens.
Book Pets® provides the comfort and connection that real animals bring- but in a safe and accessible way. They represent the positive associations children have with animals, helping them relax, focus, and build confidence without the risks of live animals. By sparking that same emotional bond, Book Pets® make reading fun — and when learning is fun, it lasts a lifetime.
The Science Behind Book Pets
-
Emotional Regulation and Stress Reduction
Research shows that interacting with animals can lower cortisol levels and reduce stress, creating a better state for learning and memory retention (Beetz et al., 2012).
-
Increased Motivation and Engagement
Positive emotional states, such as comfort and joy from pet interaction, help boost motivation to engage in tasks like reading (Friedmann et al., 1980).
-
Improved Focus and Attention
Animal-assisted learning interventions have been shown to increase attention spans and reading fluency in children, especially those with learning differences (Basette & Taber-Doughty, 2014).
-
Social and Cognitive Benefits
Pets help children develop empathy, social skills, and confidence, which are all critical for holistic educational success (Jalongo, 2005).
-
Benefits of Physical Books
Research shows reading physical books improves comprehension, focus, and memory compared to screens. Physical books provide spatial and tactile cues that help the brain create mental maps of information, making it easier to remember and understand what we've read (Delgado et al., 2018; Clinton, 2019).
Meet the Real Monty
Monty the Rescue Dog - Our Very First Book Pet
Monty is based on our real rescue dog - a sensitive soul who found his forever home and discovered his love for dancing and bringing joy to everyone around him. His journey of turning struggles into snuggles through a gentle, positive approach inspired Book Pets and our belief in learning through understanding, patience, connection, and positive association.
Every Monty purchased donates $3 to SPCA
Meet the Real Oni
Oni the Caring Unicorn (Onicorn)
Oni is inspired by the Blue Oni from Japanese folklore and our family's sweethorse, Honour - a dream horse whose name reminds us to believe in ourselves. Like the Blue Oni who showed that caring and kindness is true strength, and like Honour who watches over all our farm animals, Oni embodies patience, understanding, and a compassionate soul who loves to care for others.
